Business Strategy

A company’s overall success depends on its ability to compete—and more than 90% of competition occurs at the business unit level. Strategic thinking must encompass two areas: the structure and health of an industry, and the company’s position within the industry.

Drivers of Business Unit Performance

Every industry has an inherent structure, driven by five competitive forces. How healthy or attractive an industry is as a whole—as well as a company’s strategic position within it—determines profitability.

Elements of a Successful Strategy

Profitability is defined in part by the structure of a given industry—but taking the right strategic steps can help companies gain competitive advantage and improve relative performance.
