MOC Network 20th Anniversary Workshop
The December 2022 workshop was the 20th annual gathering of global faculty at Harvard Business School. The annual event included training sessions for new and returning faculty, sharing of research publications, and planning meetings for the MOC Network. To mark the milestone anniversary, the keynote speakers and guest panelists on each day of the event were drawn from graduates of the course now making their mark in economic development careers.

Through its 20 years the MOC Network has successfully leveraged a network of scholars and change leaders on a global scale to translate Prof. Porter’s rich conceptual framework into practical efforts that raise competitiveness and, ultimately, citizens’ standard of living.
- The MOC course provides an integrative framework to understand and analyze the drivers of competitiveness.
- MOC faculty and their students become local experts in applying these tools in the context of their specific location.
- Universities and individual research institutes in the MOC Affiliate Network serve as platforms for support in collaborative efforts for competitiveness upgrading.
This report captures the history of the network and shares examples of impactful initiatives and activities over its time.

Tony joined the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) as Director-General in November 2020. His career spans a range of roles in business, media and government. Before the CBI, Tony was the first CEO of Be the Business, a business-led movement created to transform UK’s productivity founded by a group of FTSE-100 Chairmen and the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne. From 2010-2017 Tony was International Director, then Chief Strategy Officer, at Guardian News & Media.

Kiril is a Bulgarian politician, economist, and entrepreneur, who served as Prime Minister of Bulgaria from December 2021 to August 2022. He is the co-leader of We Continue the Change, a political party he co-founded with Asen Vasilev. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University.

Elisabeth is a principal research scientist and executive director of the MIT Industrial Performance Center as well as a lecturer in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP). She has been actively engaged in efforts to rebuild manufacturing capabilities in the U.S., as a Special Assistant to President Biden for Manufacturing and Economic Development from March 2021 to September 2022 and most recently as a member of the Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative. She is a graduate of Harvard College and holds a Master’s in Economics from the University of Montreal as well as a PhD from MIT DUSP.
