HARVARD PROFESSOR MICHAEL E. PORTER RECEIVES 2005 DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR TO CASE RESEARCH AND TEACHING AWARD

BOSTON, Nov. 4, 2005 -- Michael E. Porter, Harvard’s Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, based at Harvard Business School (HBS), and the world’s leading authority on the competitive strategy of companies and countries, has been honored as the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Contributor to Case Research and Teaching Award by the North American Case Research Association (NACRA).

The largest organization exclusively devoted to encouraging faculty to research, write, and publish case studies, NACRA established the Award in the late 1980s to recognize lifetime achievements and contributions.

Professor Porter joins other past NACRA award winners, including Harvard Business School Professor Emeritus Paul Lawrence and the late Professor C. Roland Christensen, who was a champion of case method teaching during his long career at HBS.

Porter heads the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness (ISC), a joint creation of Harvard University and Harvard Business School to further his extensive research. Among his other duties, he teaches a unique University-wide course on competitiveness and economic development that is also taught at 56 other universities around the world using materials, video content, and faculty training provided by Porter and his ISC colleagues.

A 1969 graduate of Princeton University in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Porter earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1971 and a Ph.D. in business economics from Harvard University in 1973.
